Basically, engraving is a machining technique in which the starting material is processed in such a way that a minimal part of the starting workpiece is removed. Depending on the engraving technique, the surface of the selected material is machined with the appropriate tools.

The techniques in use today vary considerably from one another and can convince with different advantages. The requirements of the end product are usually decisive for the decision for the respective engraving technique.

 

Modern CNC milling engraving, which is carried out with the help of state-of-the-art, automated CNC milling machines, is particularly well suited for series production. The machines score here with the highest precision and variable costs, which decrease with increasing quantities. The costs are made up of one-off programming costs and then comparatively low maintenance costs for the machines.

In contrast, manual milling engravings offer more variability and design freedom, as the workpieces are not automated but machined individually. By operating a crank, the desired positions are approached individually and not pre-programmed. Thus, this engraving technique is best suited for one-off designs that are to be created precisely and according to a template.

The oldest form of engraving is classical hand engraving, in which an engraver works freehand on the surface of the product in the traditional craft manner with a chisel-like burin. By using different angles and depths, the engraver has the opportunity to create a particularly vivid and very lively representation. The quality of the motifs thus achieved by an experienced engraver is unrivaled by machines to this day.
