Notable exceptions include the renowned South African Krugerrand and the Mexican Libertad—bullion coins whose nominal value is determined daily based on the current precious metal price.

Other types have also entered the coin market, such as agency coins. Rather than being minted by state mints, these are produced under licenses granted by foreign central banks to established private mints or large coin dealers. While this model was once met with skepticism, agency coins now enjoy a large following among collectors, impressing with exotic and creative designs. They also provide smaller nations with an opportunity to gain international visibility by issuing distinctive currency—color coins, in particular, are highly popular with collectors.

Beyond their collectible value, coins are also widely used as investment assets. Depending on their unique characteristics, some coins are better suited for capital investment, while others appeal to collectors. Bullion coins, which have a high material value, often exceed their nominal face value and are especially attractive to investors thanks to their intrinsic value and inflation resistance.

These coins are often custom-made, commemorating important events or individuals. Unlike bullion coins, the material value of collector coins is usually lower than their face value.
